Have you ever wondered what makes a resume stand out? Or what makes it get lost within the "black-hole" of resumes recruiters often receive? Well, wonder no more! The HR Boss has got you!
Here are five easy steps you can take to make your resume pop:
1. Appearance is EVERYTHING!
Too many resumes have a cookie cutter image which doesn’t help you to stand out from your competition. It won't matter how talented you are if your resume doesn’t grab the recruiter's attention. The HR Boss suggests that you:
- Ensure you utilize a clean and creative layout, but keep it professional.
- Choose an easy to read font and use it consistently throughout the resume.
- Ensure you utilize bullet points to make comprehensive easy to read list for recruiters to follow.
2. Spell Check
Recruiters hate to read resumes with grammatical errors. Ironically, many candidates often list “attention to detail” as one of their skills.
Trust me - it is not a good look.
Ensure you double and triple -check your resume or utilize spell check.
3. Experience & Qualifications
Ensure you list your work experience and qualifications, starting with the most recent. Depending on the role you are applying for, you might want to give more detail on any relevant duties which can help your application by listing your responsibilities and any people you supervise.
4. Contact Information
Ensure you provide current home, cellular phone numbers, email and mailing address.
Now you have successfully completed the steps mentioned, ensure you actually answer the phone. It is a pet peeve of recruiters to call a candidate and not be able to reach them because you're out of money (if you are a culprit-GET YOUR LIFE!) or unavailability.
Get it together – you wouldn’t want to miss out on an opportunity!
5. Sending it In!
If you are sending your resume via email, ensure you use a professional email address. Check out Career Tips page for help. If you decide to go the traditional mailing method (which is outdated and can cause your resume to get lost, not to mention recruiters hate piles of paper resumes.) Ensure you have the current mailing address and address it to the right person.
