Why it doesn’t pay to be basic

I’ve contemplated blogging about this for the last few weeks but it’s a necessary topic we must tackle. If you read my blog post on North American millennials vs Caribbean millennials you would know that North American millennials have no issues with promoting themselves, while Caribbean millennials seem to be more culturally shy when it comes to promoting themselves.

Here is why it doesn’t pay to be basic:

What’s there to lose? Really…ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen if you unapologetic-ally promoted yourself…

Move people would know you, greater opportunities and build a network. Whereas if you don’t do it no one would know, you make no progress and you remain right where you are now.

One example of this is Shameless Maya whose social media social experiment on promoting herself four (4) years ago; caused her to be seen on YouTube by Prince which landed her the opportunity of working with him…now she has her own Production company.

Our regional example would be DJ Puffy who has revolutionized the DJ game taking us on his journey on YouTube and other social media audiences. You see, these persons have recognized that in order for their current situation to change they had to get out there and do something about it and not wait on people to see their greatness.

Here’s some homework for you:

Think about something you are great at effortlessly and begin to strategically plan towards perfecting your craft and putting yourself out there.

Yes! I know it can be quite intimidating… I am a twenty something year old HR Consultant in an industry dominated by Baby Boomers but I have unapologetically promoted a skill set I have developed and quite frankly I’ve become a BOSS at what I do…HR.
