Starting a new job can be intimidating you are entering a new environment with unfamiliar people and possibly a different organisational culture.

If it is your first job... your fears would be magnified by 100.

Don't worry I've got you!

Here are a few tips that will help you through the newbie stage of any job.

Tip #1: Ask a question!

Many people feel intimidated by their new co-workers but really, they are the greatest knowledge resource you have. You are new and you won't know everything; find a helpful workmate and get some advice.

Tip #2: Document

I've learnt that it is important to document everything.

Here is why: Failure to document can lead to complications in the event that there is a miscommunication or if something goes wrong. Documenting via email to clarify instructions etc. can give you coverage in the event that someone tries to blame the newbie if something goes wrong.

Tip #3: Stay NEUTRAL

In an effort to fit in you maybe persuaded to join a particular clique in the workplace. However, falling into a clique could eventually stunt your growth at the company if the clique is thought to be negative. If it is positive - you could experience personal growth, but be mindful of people that may not favour you because of the company you keep.

I know...tough call...but my advice is to remain as neutral as you possibly can.

Tip #4: Encourage Feedback

Many people are not big fans of criticism but let me tell you this ... taking constructive criticism is the BEST way to improve yourself. Take lots of notes especially from your boss and people who are where you want to be in life.

Tip #5: Be Professional

Be punctual, meet deadlines and conduct yourself in a professional manner. Limit personal conversations and get on with the work. People will respect you on a professional level if you show that you are serious about your work.
